This article analyzes the bureaucratization process undergone by the universities of the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities between 1993 and 2016.
This fact is reviewed and compared with international literature. It can be seen that some aspects, such as the growing number of non-academic staff with professional degrees, are in line with global trends. Others, on the other hand, seem to respond to local characteristics.
The Council of Rectors" Yearbook, which contains detailed information on both personnel and financial data, was used as a data source.
In addition, some theoretical proposals are made to formulate new research questions, some of which address the Latin American specificities of the problem.
