This paper tries to show the institutional frame within which convergence takes place in the Chilean higher educational system. It offers a brief characterization of the idea of convergence, gives concrete examples of how it takes place, and refers to the legal frame that enables it to happen in public institutions. Finally, it describes the most outstanding state entities in terms of convergence (the Rectors's Council, The Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education, the Superior Council of Education and the Scientific and Technological Investigation National Commitee),and indicates its characteristics, as well as the functions and activities that take place in the area.
