Abstract

The reasons for procrastination in activities related to the writing of dissertations or thesis is relevant to reflect on whether procrastination contributes negatively to achieving academic goals. The aim of this work was to verify the intensity of reasons for procrastination in activities related to the elaboration of dissertations or theses among Brazilian students who are studying stricto sensu postgraduate courses in the business area. The instrument used in this study links the reasons for academic procrastination with fear of success and fear of failure. The sample analyzed the answers of 288 Brazilian students from the business area. Descriptive analyzes and between-group difference tests were performed. The results show that the certainty of being successful in carrying out the tasks was the reason with the greatest intensity of procrastination during the preparation of dissertations or theses; accounting students present a greater intensity of motives compared to economics students. The study shows that academic procrastination seems to be a dynamic behavior and is related to moments of solitude during which students need to dedicate themselves to write dissertations or theses.
