This article presents a taxonomy of theoretical approaches regarding the link between higher vocational and technical education institutions and employers. Its aim is to propose an analytical framework for evaluating research in this domain, given the critical role of this linkage in the credibility of higher technical and vocational education. Drawing from the existing literature, three overarching approaches emerge: A rule-centric perspective, a coordination-centric viewpoint, and an agent-centric lens. Each approach is argued to provide essential insights into the linkage issue, addressing it at varying degrees of abstraction.
