Abstract

This article reveals results from the research "Standards and perceptions regarding to the academic career: analysis on the institutional context and teachers" experiences in Chilean universities", including 67 interviews to teachers belonging to seven public and private universities at southern, northern and central areas of the country. The study shows advanced degrees (such as PhD and post-PhD) and research skills (measured by the number of projects awarded and ISI or SciELO articles published) have a wider impact and are more significant to reach success and stability in a career. Although less valued, teaching and managing roles are indispensable conditions institutions request to their teachers. The analysis includes how variables such as age, gender, discipline (knowledge field) and type of institution (public or private) increase complexity in defining what career to choose and become an interesting field for the future managing of university system in Chile.
