Abstract

This paper describes contents and evolution of Mexican graduate policy from 1985 to 2006. To that end, particular emphasis is given on the evaluation programs implemented by the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (Science and Technology National Board). The aim here is to show that, during the last twenty years, the evaluation system for graduate programs has undergone some modifications: it incorporated professionally-oriented graduate programs (alongside the research-oriented programs); it also gave a more detailed account of its criteria of evaluation and, besides, it created an special category in order to reinforce graduate programs. Despite of those facts, the number of graduate programs that have been accredited by the National Board is still very low, compared with the total number of graduate programs in Mexico. That shows that the majority of Mexican graduate programs are excluded from the additional resources the Board offers for their strengthening.
