This article addresses what an academic career is and shows that, although there is an "ideal model" about the question, there are several ways to be an academic depending on different and individual experiences, age, gender and discipline, as well as the kind of institution the academic belongs to. There is also an analysis about other models for being academic in relation to the current normative ideal model which gives emphasis to scientific productivity in terms of research and publications. For the analysis it was necessary to review some literature on higher education and previous findings of the ongoing research "Norms and perceptions about the academic career. Reviewing the institutional context and the experience from Chilean universities teachers".Downloads
