Based on the Theory of Social Systems developed by the German sociologist Niklas Luhmann, the article characterizes universities as organizational systems, describing the major elements that stem from such formulation, and outlines its systemic understanding. We intend to show that, for the purposes of observing universities within the society of knowledge, the theory of autopoietic social systems -in addition to being feasible- is worthy of consideration, at least in the implications of some of its conceptual elements.Downloads
