The paper describes the development of quality assurance systems in Chile by analyzing the changes in its higher education system and the challenges that these changes pose for the quality of the educational supply. The mechanisms examined include mandatory accreditation (licensing) of new higher education institutions and voluntary accreditation for autonomous study programs and institutions. The paper concludes with a comparison of the underlying rationales of these processes and a reflection on the impact that they have had on the higher education system.Downloads
