This paper analyzes post-graduate studies in engineering in Chile and proposes some ideas on how to orient such studies in future. The proposals are based on the hypothesis that engineering is a profession meant to search for solutions to society's major problems, a task that calls for a creative and innovative approach based on theoretical knowledge.
To carry out this mission, engineering and its postgraduate programs need to develop several aspects which currently lack the necessary space. These include achieving a harmonious balance between science and the profession, encouraging creativity among the students and moving toward a multidisciplinary approach, exchanging contributions with other areas of human knowledge with a view to improving the human environment, and the like.
