In 2000, the Universidad de Chile launched a very ambitious initiative that involved reforming its undergraduate studies program. It began by implementing the Basic University Education divided into six fields of knowledge. At this point, one can say that the process is irreversible, given the multiple effects caused by the features of this particular General Education Program that the Universidad de Chile has embarked on. The effects range from the huge enthusiasm of students and teachers, passing through innovations introduced in information and communications, the creation of an open education web site at www.cfg.uchile.cl and high-level training for academicians, to the spreading of the experience to other areas and the recovery of an academic space for collective debate and reflection -or conversation- which had previously been lost.Published
