Abstract

This story discusses activities carried out by people working in universities, starting from an historical context determined by the foundation of Berlin University in 1810 and heterogeneity of roles coexisting in universities labor, intermediate between school and academia. In history, social processes related to knowledge have implied these three institutions. Historical analysis of the Chilean case shows that university institutions have experienced diverse ways of institutional development, from one fully academic to one related completely to schools. Currently, any analysis context allows heterogeneity of tasks and functions that make the role of people working in universities more complex. The story shows objections about the use of the term "academic" to refer to teachers and researchers and suggests a clarification of the different, and sometimes contradictory, demands university institution makes to its members, illustrated by the Chilean case.
