Abstract

This paper deals with the tensions that Mexican academics confront as a consequence of Mexican higher education main challenges. These challenges are increasing student enrollment, increasing the economic pertinence of its academic programs, strengthening research and making institutional administration more efficient and transparent. All of the above has generated a global expectation that academics should perform, in a "balanced" way, activities dealing with teaching, research, service and governance. Such expectation is exerting an enormous pressure over academics and pushing them to do the minimum necessary in each function in order to comply with the requirements that various programs demand in order to receive income in addition to their ordinary salary.
