Abstract

This paper analyzes the changes that have taken place in university management, based on a type of university that is complex, not for profit, with a public service vocation and an emphasis on research. The first part addresses the issue of university organization, particularly profit viewed as an element to be kept in mind in defining a management model. It then goes on to describe two processes that cut across any organization: strategic planning, which sets out the major lines for institutional development and the subject of university government, i.e. the structure that shapes the decision-making process and that makes it possible to define the proper course for the plan. The second part of the text analyzes the reactions of the university to the new trends and challenges which, essentially, determine management with a view to delivering adequate responses to the requirements posed by a diverse and changing environment.
