Abstract

Accreditation systems are established to set standards and to measure quality. One of the most difficult hurdles Latin American and Caribbean institutions will face as they achieve higher and higher standards will be the need to increase the qualifications of the faculty. The current state of the professorate shows a significant gap in two important areas: the extent to which faculty members have achieved graduate degrees and their rate of scientific production. An increase in the number of faculty with advanced degrees can be achieved by creating incentives for study in accredited national Ph.D. programs, sending faculty to other countries for advanced degree programs, recruiting international faculty, and investing in career development through "in service" programs such as executive education Accreditation standards that include measures of faculty achievement will provide needed incentives to bridge the knowledge gap in Latin America and the Caribbean.
