Abstract

This article highlights the difficulty encountered in the task of ranking universities, taking as an illustration the typology of Chilean universities proposed in the report "Guiar el Mercado: Informe sobre la Educación Superior en Chile", published by José Joaquín Brunner, Gregory Elacqua, Anthony Tillett and collaborators. The issues of consistency observed in the classification presented resulting from the use of selectivity for the admission of pre-grade students as a main classification criterion, are highlighted. By contrast, the evolution of the Carnegie classification of higher education institutions in the USA is discussed and commented. Coming back to Chile, the article proposes that the functions of universities, measured by their output or results be used as main classification criterion.
